What is a Windlass?

A windlass is a mechanical device used on a boat to raise and lower the anchor. Instead of pulling up a heavy anchor and chain by hand, the windlass does the hard work for you. It's essentially a powered winch that's mounted on the bow (the front) of a boat and connected to the anchor chain or rope, which is also called the rode.

Think of it like a power tool for anchoring. Without it, deploying and retrieving an anchor on a larger boat would be physically exhausting, and in some cases, nearly impossible.

Why is a Windlass Important?

Anchoring is one of the most routine parts of boating. You anchor to take a swim break, wait out rough weather, fish a specific spot, or spend the night on the water. Doing all of that by hand gets old fast, especially on boats where the anchor and chain can weigh 50 to 150 pounds or more.

A windlass makes anchoring safer and more controlled. You can drop and retrieve your anchor at a steady, manageable pace rather than dealing with a free-falling chain or straining your back hauling it back up. It also frees up your hands so you can focus on maneuvering the boat at the same time.

How Does a Windlass Work?

Most modern windlasses are powered electrically, drawing from your boat's battery system. When you press a button or foot switch, the motor inside the windlass turns a drum or gypsy (a notched wheel) that either feeds out or takes in the anchor chain and rode.

The chain links fit into the grooves of the gypsy, which gives it a solid grip as it pulls the anchor back aboard. Some units also include a rope drum for boats that use rope rode instead of, or in addition to, chain.

Controls vary by model. Some windlasses use a handheld remote or a switch panel at the helm. Others are operated by a foot switch mounted on the deck near the bow. Many newer systems offer both options.

Types of Windlasses

Vertical Windlass

Electric vs. Manual Windlasses

Most windlasses you'll see on recreational boats today are electric. They're convenient, fast, and can handle the job without much effort from the crew. That said, it's smart to understand the manual backup option, because electrical systems can fail.

Many electric windlasses have a manual override option, usually a hand crank or lever that you can use if the motor stops working. Always know where that backup is and how to use it before you need it in a pinch.

Manual windlasses are still used on smaller boats and some sailboats. They're simpler and don't rely on your battery, but they require a lot more physical effort.

What to Look for When Choosing a Windlass

If you're shopping for a windlass, here are a few things worth thinking about:

Boat Size and Anchor Weight

Every windlass is rated for a specific pulling capacity. You need to make sure the unit you choose can handle the combined weight of your anchor, chain, and any extra load from current or wind drag. A good rule of thumb is to choose a windlass rated for at least three times the weight of your anchor and rode combined.

Chain and Rope Compatibility

Make sure the gypsy on your windlass matches the size and type of chain you use. Chain sizing is not universal, and a mismatch can cause serious problems.

Power Draw

Electric windlasses pull a significant amount of current. Check the amp draw of the unit and make sure your battery system and wiring can handle the load. Undersized wiring is a fire hazard.

Build Quality

Salt water is hard on equipment. Look for windlasses made from corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel or high-strength nylon, and check that the motor is properly sealed against water intrusion.

How to Maintain Your Windlass

A windlass works hard and lives in a tough environment. Salt spray, UV exposure, and constant mechanical stress take a toll. A little maintenance goes a long way toward keeping it reliable season after season.

After each trip, rinse your windlass with fresh water to wash away salt and grime. This is one of the simplest things you can do to extend the life of the unit. Pay special attention to the gypsy, as chain debris and sediment can build up in the grooves and cause wear over time.

Periodically check all electrical connections for corrosion. Even small amounts of corrosion on the terminals can reduce performance or cause the unit to fail unexpectedly. Use a corrosion inhibitor spray on the contacts to keep them clean.

Lubricate moving parts according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Most windlasses have a grease fitting or require occasional oiling on the drum shaft and other mechanical parts.

Inspect the rode and chain regularly. Look for any links that are stretched, twisted, or showing signs of rust. A weak link in the chain is a real safety issue, and it's much better to catch it during an inspection than to find out the hard way at anchor.

Finally, test the windlass before every outing, not just when you think something is wrong. A quick run-up and run-down in calm conditions gives you confidence that everything is working and alerts you to any new sounds or hesitations that might signal a developing issue.

Windlass Runs Slow or Struggles – This usually points to low battery voltage, a bad connection, or a motor that's starting to wear out. It can also mean the unit is undersized for the load.

Chain Slipping on the Gypsy – This is often a sign that the chain and gypsy sizes don't match well, or that there's too much debris packed into the gypsy grooves. Clean the gypsy and double-check your chain size.

Unusual Noises Grinding or clicking usually means something is worn, loose, or needs lubrication. Get it looked at before it becomes a bigger problem.
